crichton thumbs-up, not looking convinced
I am still reading and commenting, honest!

Places I am when I'm not failing to post here includes Goodreads and Tumblr. Add me there or comment here with links to your accounts! I'd love to get more into both.

Also, NaNo is almost upon us! Who's taking part? I'm going to try to complete a project I started during Camp NaNo. It involves a woman who likes enclosed spaces getting magically framed for murder. And a great deal of snow. And pretty dresses. My profile page is, I think, miss-haitch. (Despite having participated in NaNo since 2008, I still haven't quite got the hang of navigating the site...)

Kandila

The other day I ordered a copy of Kandila, a book of hand-written calligraphic poetry, and I'm very excited about it! [personal profile] ephemere's work is lovely: here is one of her poems; here are some samples of her calligraphy; here are some illustrations. If you've got some spare funds, I would wholeheartedly recommend having a look at Kandila.

calligraphy poembook

Kandila will be a little book rendered completely, from the title page to the very last leaf, in calligraphy. It will feature three of my (rather long!) bilingual love poems to my country, the Philippines, rendered in different calligraphic styles, as well as a few pages of baybayin calligraphy and "Mia playing around with letters" calligraphy art. I estimate the approximate length at fifty to sixty calligraphed pages. Each book will be signed.

A .pdf of the entire book will be available for free online. Please note that there will be parts of this book rendered in Filipino, but the translation will not be calligraphed; instead it will be available as a printed sheet accompanying the book, and will also be freely viewable online.

Kandila will be sent out by mid-November. All funds raised will go toward supporting me in the wake of my being terminated from my job, which I lost due to my unwillingness to remain silent about my marginalized identity and beliefs.Details here.

Please support her & signal boost if you can!

I am indebted to [personal profile] iamshadow for sharing this delicious cake bar recipe on [community profile] omnomnom the other day. I've made two batches already. SO TASTY.

Latest news:
-I have been writing, which is a refreshing feeling given how tired my body and brain are at the moment. On a sidenote, I have some shiny new [community profile] origfic_bingo cards which are looking tasty. Mixing metaphors ftw? I don't even know.
-Wisteria petals have blown everywhere along on the street and the patio. One of the shops has petals scattered over its floorboards. It looks and smells gorgeous.

Other news:
-The other day I read Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai, which is a verse novel about a young girl leaving Vietnam for America during the Vietnam War, and was excellent.
-Today I watched Aliens for the first time, which was also excellent.
-Blog posts are a bit much for my brain this week.
-On the other hand, I have had the brain for a couple of picspams of attractive people, so there's that.

Many thanks for the health well wishes! I think it's hayfever rather than a virus - which is good, because coughs and colds have a habit of laying me low for an unpleasant amount of time. After the break yesterday I feel much rejuvenated.

Today's news:
-I sent off a job application to my uni tutor to look through and advise on.

-The weather is glorious: blue sky without a cloud for the whole day. The wind blows leaves and petals everywhere, and by the time I got back indoors my hair was ... let's say gone-through-a-hedge-backwards and be done with it. (Why yes I am British, and therefore obsessed with weather, how did you guess?)

-The tents for the Arts Festival are going up - I'm looking forward to it! Last year there was an awesome music session, and listening to the music through the windows was fabulous. Big-band renditions of Beatles songs ftw. I hope there's a repetition this year.

-I've been rewatching the Hornblower miniseries (The Frogs and the Lobsters, AKA The Wrong War) which is awesome and unintentionally hilarious by turns. Major Edrington contrives to be amazingly snarky no matter what he says.

-[personal profile] rhian_crockett wrote a retelling of a Welsh myth for 3W4DW. Check it out!

7. What is your favourite community on Dreamwidth?
At the moment it's got to be [community profile] junetide - I heart the idea of a Yuletide-style original fic exchange, and I'm looking forward to seeing what comes out of it! (And also hopefully taking part in it next year, when I've got more brain space.)

Rest of the questions here.

Today's news:

I'm ill with some kind of congestion/cold/hayfever thing. The good news is, it's a long time since I had it, and [personal profile] feuille has been making sushi for our dinner. The bad news is, I've spent the day on the sofa getting bored and poking around on the internet. I'm in the mood for new books to read for relaxation and recuperation - what have you enjoyed reading recently, Circle?

6. What do you wish people who read your journal knew about you?

I'm more shy online than offline. I faff around for ages before subscribing to blogs and flibble about the etiquette of commenting. So if I haven't said anything in a while, it's probably something to do with that.

Rest of the questions here.

5. How about when you're not on the computer?

Teacher training has taken up a lot of energy since September. People said it would be tough, but I didn't really take it in until it was happening! I read books and write, and relax playing games of computer, board and tabletop varieties. I garden, do yoga and hang out with [personal profile] feuille and friends. It's quiet for the most part, but it's a nice break from teaching-stress. When things are less hectic, I enjoy walking in pretty settings - especially cliffsides.

Rest of the questions here.

Today's news:

-The final assignment is handed in (case study of a child's speaking, listening, reading and writing and teaching all four). For the first time in my academic life, I was worried about going over the word limit. I'm normally very concise (too concise, one might say), but I had to go through it with hedgeclippers and get rid of 1000 words in one fell swoop.

-The four-day weekend begins here! It's fabulous to have a breather before going back to school next week. There's going to be a street party near where I live - I think the feel-good energy will be rejuvenating. I'm especially looking forward to the Russian and Jewish food stall, and [personal profile] feuille's cupcakes.

-On the other hand, I may end up sleeping through the whole thing.

-A few weeks ago, I went to a Royal Horticultural Society workshop about gardening in schools and picked up some free seeds. Now my salad leaves and sunflower are coming along a treat! I've never grown something by myself before, and I've killed a mini-orange tree and a rosemary bush. I have my fingers firmly crossed for these plucky seedlings. They are highlighted as good for young children to grow, so maybe they'll be suited to my gardening ability...?

-Portal 2 continues to be excellent on second run-through.

-I am not finding Half Life as good this time round, in that it displays the Half Life series' fondness for stacking boxes on top of each other.

4. What do you do online when you're not on DW?

I read blogs mostly involving book reviews and cats, I read webcomics on and off (Dinosaur Comics is my current favourite), I play Echo Bazaar, and I play in a World of Darkness LARP/forum RPG. I tend to be a lurker/reader rather than creating content.

Rest of the questions here.

3. Do you crosspost? Why or why not?

I used to, but I don't anymore. I prefer consolidating my blogging activity in one place - it's enough effort maintaining this thing, maintaining more would be a bit much for me!
